Galaxy Zoo 2 Challenge
As part of the International Year of Astronomy, Galaxy Zoo 2 is celebrating 100 Hours of Astronomy this weekend by challenging people to make 1 million clicks in 100 hours. You don’t have to be a regular user at Galaxy Zoo, you can still register and join in this exciting project to help classify galaxies.
Galaxy Zoo was orginally launched in July 2007. Volunteers sorted through a million digital images of galaxies, collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and classified them according to their shapes. Many projects are underway using the data collected by Galaxy Zoo, which you can read about here, in the first papers to be published as a result of the project. There have been a few interesting discoveries made by Galaxy Zoo volunteers along the way, such as The Voorwerp, which Galaxy Zoo scientists are working on to find out exactly what it is.
Galaxy Zoo 2 still needs volunteers to help with the data they’ve collected. So, if you’re interested in astronomy and want to feel like you’re contributing in some way to science, register with Galaxy Zoo 2 and join in the fun.
